Initial Inspection & Diagnosis:
Upon arrival, the first step was to remove the paper tray to access the pickup mechanism. Removing the tray provides access to the primary pickup rollers located directly above it, as well as the separation pad or roller integrated within the tray assembly.
These rollers function similarly to a car tyre—over time, the rubber surface becomes worn and smooth, reducing the roller’s ability to grip and feed paper effectively.
Procedure:
After assessing the condition of the rollers, the initial corrective action was to clean them. The pickup roller was removed by reaching inside the printer and releasing the retaining clip on one end, allowing the roller to slide out—this is the same procedure used when installing a replacement roller kit.
A specialised rubber roller cleaning solution was used to clean both the pickup roller and separation pad. This solution helps remove dust and debris while restoring some grip to the rubber surface, thereby extending the functional lifespan of the components.
Outcome & Recommendations:
Cleaning the rollers and surrounding area often restores paper pickup functionality, which was the case in this instance. However, while the immediate issue was resolved through cleaning, a long-term solution would involve replacing the worn rollers with a new set.
Additional Service Performed:
As part of our standard service protocol, the following additional checks and maintenance were carried out:
- Cleaned the printer’s LCD display and external casing
- Inspected the toner cartridge for leakage or damage
- Examined the fuser unit for wear and residue build-up
Conclusion:
The printer is now operational, and paper feed functionality has been restored. It is advised that the pickup rollers and separation pad be replaced in the near future to ensure continued reliability.
